here are rumors that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight will be announced in the next two weeks during the Super Bowl on February 1st in order to gain maximum exposure.
By having the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight announced during the Super Bowl, the Maweather vs. Pacquiao fight announcement would be heard by millions. For example, last year’s Super Bowl contest between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos was watched by 111.5 million viewers.
Just imagine that many viewers getting the opportunity to learn about the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight during an interesting commercial advertising the fight. Granted, the cost of a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao commercial would be expensive, but it would be well worth it. The cheaper alternatives would be having Mayweather and Pacquiao be given a short interview by the Super Bowl commentators at some point during the broadcast. That would be an interesting way to announce the fight, as well as a pre-recorded interview.
Sam Watson, an associate of Mayweather’s adviser Al Haymon, said that having the fight announced during the Super Bowl would be an excellent way to tip the boxing fans off to the Mayweather fight. He didn’t say whether that will actually happen, but he was all for something like that taking place.
Pacquiao has agreed to the terms for the Mayweather fight, and we’re now just waiting to see when Mayweather will make his agreement to the contract. Mayweather stands to make a reported $120 million by himself for this fight. It’s a hefty sum. Pacquiao would be getting $80 million out of a $200 million jackpot for the fight.
The pay-per-view numbers for the fight is expected to shatter the all-time record of 2.4 million buys set by Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya nearly a decade ago. It’s a fight that would sell itself, but it would definitely help to have it advertised during the Super Bowl broadcast.
Just having it talked about in front of over 100 million viewers would be huge, especially if they were able to show some video of Mayweather and Pacquiao’s past fights in order to entice the casual boxing fans into wanting to purchase the fight. It would definitely be a way of creating new fans to the sport.
Showtime and HBO will still need to come to an agreement to televise the fight jointly, but they’re expected to work out a deal to make this happen. It’s too big of a fight for them to fail to agree on televising it.
